What is Opportunity University?

Our Opportunity University curriculum includes the following learning opportunities:

Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin’ by World is a curriculum designed to help low-income people evaluate their resources, understand the realities of our economy and create a plan that leads to economic stability and a secure future.  It focuses on empowering them to move beyond the “tyranny of the moment”, which is the continuous series of crises that paralyzes many in poverty and prevents them from planning and moving towards a chosen future.

Bridges out of Poverty is a workshop is designed for human service professionals, volunteers and others working with low-income people motivated to achieve self-sufficiency.  Participants learn about key resources, besides financial, necessary for self-sufficiency, new and unique intervention strategies, and how the hidden rules of economic class affect behavior, mindset and communication.  Participants will learn how to more effectively facilitate responsible, self-directed decision-making and planning.  Workshop content is based on the most current research from Bridges out of Poverty and the Bucks County Opportunity Council’s twelve years of experience successfully empowering low-income people to self-sufficiency

The Poverty Simulation is a full or half-day hands-on activity that reinforces the principles of Bridges Out of Poverty by enabling participants role-play low-income families and community services to recreate real-life scenarios.  The simulation is designed to help people understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family trying to move beyond survival and achieve sustainable economic self-sufficiency.

BUCK$ LEARN is a series of four workshops that provide practical information and tools you can use in the real world to gain control of your money.  Workshops participants learn about and discuss budgeting, credit cards, debit cards, banking, credit and credit repair.
