Nykeisha obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management with honors in August 2015 from Philadelphia University. She was always working hard while attending school and raising her daughter as a single mom yet struggled financially. She was frustrated that as hard as she was trying she could not get ahead and often fell short.
Along with BCOC assisting with housing, transportation and education costs there were many in our community who helped out. Nykeisha received a generous scholarship toward education cost from the Village Improvement Association. Year long assistance was provided through an Adopt a Family donor named Bud. With great care Bud put together bags of household necessities and he never forgot to include items for her daughter, Tiara. One time he included a tiaras for Tiara! Nykeisha was very close to completing college when her car broke down and was not repairable. BCOC had just launched our Wheelz to Work program and Nykeisha was one of the first recipients of a donated vehicle. Gary, who donated his 2001 Honda Accord, said he looked around before deciding to donate the car to BCOC. He saw many charities using the middleman to sell the donated car and he waned to give the vehicle to someone in need.
After graduation Nykeisha hoped to work in finance area but with a non-profit. She started a full-time position through AmeriCorps VISTA in November. It is a Finance Communication Associate Position working with a finance team to build and strengthen their grant management system. With this position she gained valuable experience working in finance in a non-profit environment.
