Last month, a local couple, Karen and Ray, wanted to give back to the community. They have two teenage daughters at home and wanted to set a good example for them. So they decided to donate their used van to a community member in need. Karen and Ray were looking for an organization that could help them. “When we decided to donate our car to charity, we were looking for an organization that would give our car to a family that could use it, not sell it and take half the donation. We are so happy that a friend of ours put us in touch with BCOC”. They liked our mission at Bucks County Opportunity Council and contacted us with their offer.
We were thrilled to hear from Karen and Ray. The van was in great condition and we were overjoyed to find a client in need of this wonderful gift. This led us to Sarah, a single mother of three young children. Sarah is a participant in our Economic Self-Sufficiency Program, working toward permanent self-sufficiency for her family. She is a full-time student attending Cosmetology School to become an instructor. Until now, Sarah has been driving an old, unreliable small car. It was not in the best condition and had over 146,000 miles on it. One of the doors had recently broken and was causing a problem getting her children to school. With three young children all seated in the back, there was very limited space for them along with their backpacks and coats. This donation was going to make a huge difference for the whole family.
Sarah came to our office with one of her sons to pick up the van. We asked her what this donation meant to her family and she said, “It’s just so fantastic! It feels so good to have the space we need after being crammed in the old car.” The van will give Sarah a safe, dependable way to make sure she and her family can get to and from school each day. On the very first day of this new van’s arrival, her children helped clean out their old car and transfer everything to their new van. They were exceptionally excited and ready to take a drive. Her oldest son now feels so special in this van, having a whole backseat to himself. The kids’ favorite part of the van is the VHS player in the back. Karen and Ray were also gracious enough to donate all of their daughters’ old VHS to Sarah’s children. The kids were so eager and excited; Sarah took them for a drive just so they could try out their first movie in the van.
Karen & Ray expressed, “Our hope is that another family can use our van to build as many great memories with it as we did!” Their wonderful donation has had an enormous impact to the lives of Sarah and her children, who now have a much safer and more reliable method of transportation. Sarah hopes to graduate this May and find a teaching position. She is incredibly grateful to receive such a special gift. This story puts a smile on all of our faces to see how much the van meant to Sarah and her kids. Thank you so much for your kind example of generosity, Karen and Ray!
